Seven vehicles, including a Seddon/Atkinson lorry and a Ford Sierra, were involved in a crash on the A616 in Barnsley at 06:50 on Friday 13 December 1996. A 55-year-old male pedestrian hit by the Rover Vitesse, a 73-year-old female passenger in the Ford Sierra and the 50-year-old male driver of the Ford Sierra were killed and one other person was seriously injured.

It happened after dark with no street lighting in fine weather on a wet dual carriageway with a 60 mph limit, at a T or staggered junction.
